The Swift Creek Recycled Greenway, Cary, North Carolina

Award > Recipient of North Carolina's Take Pride in America Award in 1994. Recipient of the USDOT Federal Highway Administration's Environmental Excellence Award in 1995.

Project Description > The Swift Creek Recycled Greenway is a unique public-private initiative that merges two important environmental themes: developing greenways to protect vital natural resources from urban encroachment, and reducing human impact on the environment by recycling waste products into resources for facility development. The project was the first in the nation to make use of recycled materials for greenway facility development. This 1.0-mile greenway parallels Swift Creek, linking a corporate business park with two residential subdivisions and a town park. Project tasks included establishing a public-private partnership between 5 public agencies and 20 private companies, developing an environmental educational signage system, developing the construction details for the greenway trail and associated amenities using only recycled waste materials, and supervising construction of the facility

Greenways Incorporated developed the Recycled Greenway concept. We also served as project planner, designer, and coordinator. We worked with the Town of Cary to secure funding sources and project developers for the greenway.
