General Management Plan for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park

Project Description > Greenways Incorporated is assisting the National Park Service in facilitating a foundation workshop and developing a public input strategy for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. The park is in the early stages of a new General Management Plan (GMP). A GMP is the primary planning document for any national park and provides a twenty year vision for park management. It deal with issues such as boundary changes, new facilities, landscape management, etc. In short, any major decision should be addressed in the GMP.

The GMP should take two to three years. There will be multiple opportunities for public input. Progress reports will be posted on the park’s web site: www.nps.gov/frsp

From the 2007 Park Purpose: "The purpose of the park is to preserve, maintain, protect and provide access to the cultural and natural resources of the Civil War battlefields of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House and associated sites and to interpret and commemorate them in the larger context of the Civil War and American History for the benefit and education of visitors and the general public."
