Cherokee Pedestrian Transportation Plan

Project Description > The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians received a grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to develop a pedestrian transportation plan.  The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians brought on Greenways Incorporated (GWI) to lead the planning effort, starting in January 2009.  Cherokee, NC is also a tourist destination, nestled next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Goals for the project include better pedestrian connectivity, the reduction of automobile dependence, and safer walking areas around key destinations.  The plan includes a focus on promoting and maintaining the strong cultural heritage of the Cherokee Indians.

GWI conducted an in-depth analysis and evaluation of current conditions for walking. Both on-road and off-road facilities were evaluated for feasible solutions in a very mountainous region. Pedestrian solutions were recommended for key gaps in the existing sidewalk network along with crossing improvements, especially near schools and across major intersections.  GWI developed photo renderings for pedestrian improvements to serve as strong visualizations of how an existing environment can be improved.  The final plan includes policy update recommendations, program initiatives, implementation action steps, and funding opportunities.
