Chandler Van Schaack began working at Greenways as an intern in May of 2008, and is currently pursuing a Master's in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is specializing in land use and environmental planning.
During the academic year of 2007 and 2008, Chandler took courses in GIS, land use law, and development dispute resolution, and became familiar with many different aspects of transportation and environmental planning. Some of his favorite class projects included developing a comprehensive land use plan for a mid-sized hypothetical city, performing statistical analysis and interpretation of data on automobile usage by residents of new urbanist developments, and a research paper examining the efficacy of urban growth boundaries in the context of land use law. Having worked as a carpenter/builder in Wyoming and Colorado for over two years, Chandler has first-hand experience with all stages of the development process and is eager to use his intimate knowledge of building to inform his professional planning career.
Chandler is particularly interested in incorporating green building practices and other environmental considerations into the urban planning process. He hopes to learn from his experience at Greenways how to combine bike and pedestrian planning with other sustainable development practices to create context-sensitive and environmentally friendly developments.
With Greenways Incorporated, Chandler has used his research and GIS skills to assist in numerous projects, including, but not limited to, the Carrboro Bike Plan for his current home of Carrboro, NC; the Raleigh Bike Plan in Raleigh, NC; the Triangle Bike Map for the greater Triangle Region, NC; the Jacksonville Bike and Pedestrian Plan, Jacksonville, NC; and the Conover Pedestrian Plan in Conover, NC.
