Cape Fear Historic Byway Corridor Management Plan

Award > American Society of Landscape Architects, North Carolina Chapter, 2008 Honor Award, in Recognition of Outstanding Professional Achievement

Project Description > The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization secured a ‘Scenic Byway’ designation from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, for a corridor located within the heart of downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. Greenways Incorporated, in partnership with URS and Stewart Engineering, was selected to complete a Corridor Management Plan (CMP) for the byway.

Drawing from stakeholder meetings and public workshops, the CMP will describe the vision and goals for the future of the byway and how to achieve them. The intrinsic qualities of the byway (scenic, natural, historic, cultural, archeological, and recreational) are also described in the CMP, along with strategies for their preservation and enhancement. After a thorough review of the opportunities and constraints along the corridor, the CMP recommends corridor improvements, such as streetscape elements, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and landscaping, etc. Additionally, the CMP outlines programmatic guidelines for wayfinding, interpretation, and marketing. Finally, a review of potential funding sources is paired with an action plan to guide the project steering committee through a phased approach to implementation.
