Aberdeen Pedestrian Transportation Plan

>> COMMENT FORM <<

Project Description > The Town of Aberdeen, NC received a grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to develop a pedestrian transportation plan.  The Town of Aberdeen selected Greenways Incorporated (GWI) to lead the planning effort, starting in December 2010.

According to the Town's grant application, the vision for this plan is as follows:

"Aberdeen's 10-year pedestrian vision involves creating a more walkable community with a pedestrian infrastructure network of sidewalks and greenway trails that connects its historic downtown area, Aberdeen Lake Park, local schools, and surrounding residential and commercial areas."

Goals of this plan involve the following:

* Reduce Aberdeen's general auto-dependency and provide alternative means of accessing local destination points.

* Reduce the number of pedestrian-auto crashes over the 2010-2020 decade by 50% from the 1997-2007 number of 28 as measured by NCDOT.

* Increase miles of off-road greenway trails from 1 to 6 by 2020.

* Make downtown Aberdeen and Aberdeen Park more accessible by foot for residents living east of Sandhills Blvd., especially Aberdeen's older, low-income, and minority residents.

This page will be updated as meeting dates and times are established, and as project materials and drafts are developed.
